It depends. A T-pose is good for simple characters like Sonic who, if their elbow twist, it's not noticeable and rigging them in a T pose is easier. The only reason I wouldn't recommend a T Pose is for realistic characters (eg-Spiderman models are never rigged in a T-Pose) who you can clearly see when their twisting their arm, etc. And in their pose their arms are already slightly twisted to make sure the deformations go well. Another reason why sometimes a T pose isn't used make sure when they're animated their shoulders remain a certain shape where you can't be so sure of the shoulders when rigging in a T pose.
