On the sonic 3D model, draw a model sheet and put it in. Thats what I always do and I get quicker and better results. Also, in Autodesk Maya to keep it from crashing or failing change the background to plain white. I think the hotkey was press ctrl b to change the background. It helps A LOT with more low end computers. Lol, one time I was rigging my classic sonic model and right when I was going to save it crashed on me. The rig was so awesome but now the file is corrupt ~_~... So yeah, keep multiple saves of your files. Oh, and you being a 2D artist is a really great thing if you want to 3D model because, like I said, you can draw your own model sheets.
Oh, and in blitz sonic engines you don't need how to code to get a stage working properly. Just make sure you have face normals all set up and no strange UV maps when exporting to blitz sonic from Maya. If you want to export it as a stage, you'll need fragmotion. Export from Maya to obj (the obj export is hidden, you have to enable it through the plugin manager) and in fragmotion from obj to b3d. The hard part is fixing everything up in fragmotion before your final export. Good luck!
Oh and honestly I prefer the GDK engine if your planning to have some flexibility when making a stage. Blitzsonic is basically just a stage mesh and preset enemies so no coding is required if your just making stages. Only one sad thing though. If you use Maya like me, you can't export rigs or animations in anyway sadly. The fbx export doesnt work in fragmotion so you'll have to learn fragmotion though. Honestly learning fragmotion isn't worth it as the blitz sonic scene has been dying since around 2010 and fragmotion is much more inferior than maya when it comes to any game engine created past 2006.
But anyway, cool stuff!
